In 2002, Dr. Becker founded Covenant Wildlife Rehabilitation, a not-for-profit, 501c3 organization dedicated to caring for all injured and orphaned wild animals that were brought to her for care. This organization provides care to over 200 wild animals each year and is 100% funded through private donations.

What is Wildlife Rehabilitation?

Wildlife rehabilitation is the care of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals with the goal of releasing a healthy animal back into an appropriate, safe environment. It’s giving compromised wild animals a second chance at life.

What is a Wildlife Rehabilitator?

Wildlife rehabilitators are volunteers who are trained to care for these animals while they heal. A wildlife rehabilitator must be state and federally licensed. All animals rehabilitators care for must be released once they are well enough. No one is allowed to keep any wild animal as a pet. Both Convenant Wildlife Rehabilitation and Natural Pet Animal Hospital are state and federally licensed to care for injured wildlife. Covenant has, in addition to state and federal licenses, a special permit to care for Endangered Species and maintain feathers and talons for educational purposes. Wildlife rehabilitators are not paid and do not receive any funding from the government.

Why Rehabilitate?

Eighty percent of the injuries sustained by wildlife are directly or indirectly caused by humans. Wild animals are hit by cars, poisoned, shot and attacked by cats and dogs. As more and more natural habitats are destroyed for land development, human interaction with wildlife is inevitable and sometimes fatal. Natural Pet and Covenant Wildlife acknowledge the intrinsic value of wild creatures and commit to their protection and preservation.

Covenant‘s Mission

  • Providing a safe, humane environment for wildlife in distress.
  • Providing high quality medical and surgical services to all species of wild animals.
  • Once health has been restored, releasing the animal into an appropriate environment where it can survive on its own.
  • Providing humane euthanasia when a wild animal is injured beyond repair and cannot be released.
  • Providing educational programs to help others learn about the benefits of preserving native wildlife.

Covenant Wildlife Rehabilitation believes all animals deserve care. Many of these animals must stay weeks before they are completely healed and ready to be released back into their environment. Covenant is in need of donations to buy healthy foods, medicine and surgical supplies to help give these animals a second chance. Being a veterinarian, Dr. Becker’s talents are best utilized providing medical and surgical care to injured wild animals. There is a network of qualified wildlife rehabilitators whose expertise is raising orphaned babies or caring for certain species. Sometimes we will refer to other rehabilitators if it is more appropriate. If you have found an injured animal in the Bourbonnais IL area, please call for further instructions.
